Biorobotics Research — Modular Snake Robots
Overview
I currently work as an undergraduate researcher in Carnegie Mellon’s Biorobotics Lab, helping assemble modular snake robots being developed for applications including search and rescue and pipe inspection.
My contributions
I have assembled modules for two iterations of the snake robot, including building gearboxes and making electrical connections between modules. I also prepare module housings by installing bearings and pins and reaming holes for component fit.
Alongside assembly, I conducted a literature review evaluating the feasibility of replacing steel gears with titanium gears.
Building a foundation
Through hands-on assembly and research, I’m developing a deeper understanding of the robots’ mechanical design, electronics, and integration. I’m building on this experience to take on greater design and development responsibilities as opportunities arise within the lab.
